Melinda’s maternal grandfather was William Martin Lewis, son of Martin Strait Lewis Jr. and Hulda/Hilda Martanty Peterson. Martin Jr. was the son of Martin Strait Lewis Sr. (son of Nathaniel Hinckley Lewis and Betsy Caroline Strait) and Mary Eleanor Yorker (daughter of Christopher Yorker and Lydia Ann Batson). Hulda was the daughter of A. F. Peterson and Carolina, both Swedish immigrants.
Melinda’s maternal grandmother was Grace Elizabeth White, daughter of John Z. White and Zoe Bessie McDowell. John was the son of Albert Samuel White (son of Albert Lanson White and Mary Ann Daugherty) and Celeneira Asenith Casad (daughter of John Cazad and Louisa Jane Guthridge). Zoe was the daughter of James Franklin McDowell and Harriett E. Hall.
