Luke Appling was an American professional baseball player and minor league manager. He was a shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB), who played his entire career for the Chicago White Sox. Luke was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as a White Sox player in 1964. He was nicknamed “Old Aches and Pains.”

Luke was the son of Dola and Lucius Benjamin Appling.

Luke’s paternal grandfather was Henry Benjamin Appling (the son of William Daniel Appling and Martha Harrison/Anne Booth). Henry was born in Georgia.
