Edward Hopper was an American realist painter and printmaker. He is widely known for his oil paintings, and was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. He is known for his painting Nighthawks (1942), along with Automat (1927), Chop Suey (1929), and Office in a Small City (1953).
Edward was the son of Elizabeth Griffiths/Griffith (Smith) and Garrit/Garret Henry Hopper, a dry-goods merchant. He was married to painter Josephine Hopper, until his death.
He was of mostly Colonial American descent, predominantly Dutch. His ancestors were Dutch (mostly), with smaller amounts of English and French Huguenot, and more distant Swiss-German, German, Frisian, Northern Irish, and, from the Zabriskie line, Polish; he had a forebear born in the Virgin Islands.
Edward’s patrilineal line can be traced to Andries Willemszen Hoppe, who was born, c. 1622, in the Netherlands.
Edward’s paternal grandfather was Christian A. Hopper (the son of Albert G. Hopper and Maria/Mary “Polly” Brevoort). Albert was the son of Garrett/Garret Albertson Hopper and Catherine/Catharine/Cathlyntje Kuyper/Cooper. Maria was the daughter of Samuel Brevoort and Matilda Martyntje Zabriskie.
Edward’s paternal grandmother was Charity Blauvelt (the daughter of Abraham/Abram Blauvelt and Maria “Mary” Blauvelt). Charity was born in New Jersey. Abraham was the son of Isaac Blauvelt and Sara/Sarah Johnson. Maria was the daughter of Abraham Blauvelt and Elizabeth Petrus Haring.
Edward’s maternal grandfather was John DeWint Smith (the son of Johannes/John Smith and Aefje Blauvelt). Edward’s grandfather John was born in New York. Johannes was the son of John/Jan Smith/Smidt and Jemima De Windt/Wint, whose father was born on St. Thomas, then part of the Danish Virgin Islands, previously part of the Dutch Virgin Islands. Aefje was the daughter of Johannes Blauvelt and Claesje Blanch.
Edward’s maternal grandmother was Martha Griffiths/Griffith (the daughter of The Rev. Joseph W. Griffiths/Griffith and Elizabeth Lozier). Martha was born in New York. The Rev. Joseph was an emigrant from England, and was a Baptist minister in the U.S. Elizabeth was born in New Jersey, of mostly Dutch and French Huguenot ancestry, along with Northern Irish. She was the daughter of Hildebrandt/Hillebrandt Lozier and Elizabeth Campbell.
