J. Edgar Hoover was the 1st Director of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), serving in the position from 1935 to 1972. He was previously the director of the Bureau of Investigation, from 1924 to 1935.
J. Edgar was the son of Anna Marie (Scheitlin) and Dickerson Naylor Hoover. J. Edgar’s mother was of entirely Swiss immigrant descent (specifically Swiss-German), with all four of her grandparents having been born in Switzerland. There is some dispute as to whether J. Edgar’s father had black ancestry, although it appears that no black ancestors have been explicitly and verifiably identified for J. Edgar’s father.
J. Edgar’s paternal grandparents were John Thomas Hoover (the son of William Hoover and Elizabeth Ann Huff/Hough) and Cecilia Jane Naylor (the daughter of Dickerson Naylor and Ellen Frank).
J. Edgar’s maternal grandparents were Jacob Scheitlin (the son of Johann Joachim Scheitlin and Juditha Holzer) and Margaret Hitz (the daughter of Hans/Johannes Hitz and Anna Kohler). Jacob was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Margaret was born in Virginia, to Swiss parents, from Klosters, Graubünden.
