Tom DeLay is an American politician, lobbyist, and author. A Republican, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, from January 3, 1985 to June 9, 2006, Secretary of the House Republican Conference, from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 1995, House Majority Whip, from January 3, 1995 to January 3, 2003, and House Majority Leader, from January 3, 2003 to September 28, 2005. He co-founded the conservative K Street Project and lobbying firm First Principles, LLC.
Tom is the son of Maxine Evelyn and Charles Ray DeLay, who worked in petroleum and natural gas. He was partly raised in Venezuela, for his father’s job, and attended high school in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is married to Christine Furrh, with whom he has a daughter.
Tom’s patrilineal line appears to trace to James John Delay, who was born, c. 1726, in Bourgvilain, Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France.
Tom’s paternal grandfather was Ray Otto DeLay (the son of Jeremiah Dale “Jerry” DeLay and Serilda/Sirilda Angeline Coop). Ray was born in Topeka, Kansas. Jeremiah was the son of Joseph DeLay and Harriet Maddox. Sirilda was the daughter of William Martin Coop and Rhoda Ellen Larimore.
