John Lindsay was an American politician, lawyer, and broadcaster. He served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from January 3, 1959 to December 31, 1965, and the 103rd Mayor of New York City, from January 1, 1966 to December 31, 1973. Initially a Republican, he switched his political affiliation to Democratic in 1971.

John was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1972.

John was the son of Florence Eleanor (Vliet) and George Nelson Lindsay. His father was born in New York, to British parents, of English and Scottish ancestry. His mother had Dutch, English, and distant German, roots.

John’s paternal grandfather was John James Lindsay (the son of George Lindsey/Lindsay and Mary Anne Phillips). John’s grandfather John was born in Isle of Wight, England. George was the son of John Lindsey and Jane. Mary Anne was the daughter of George Phillips and Ann Reynolds.

John’s paternal grandmother was Anne Jane McAulay (the daughter of John McAulay).
