Harold Stassen was an American politician. A Republican, he served as District Attorney of Dakota County, from 1931 to 1939, the 25th Governor of Minnesota, from January 2, 1939 to April 27, 1943, the 3rd President of the University of Pennsylvania, from 1948 to 1953, and Director of the United States Foreign Operations Administration, from 1953 to 1955.
Harold was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1944, 1948, 1952, 1964, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992.
Harold was the son of Elsbeth/Elsie Emma (Mueller) and William Andrew Stassen. His father was born in Minnesota, to a German father and a Czech mother. His mother was a German immigrant.
Harold’s paternal grandfather was Barnhardt Hinrich Stassen (the son of John Henry Stassen and Becke Margaretha Heicken). Barnhardt was born in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. John was the son of Hinrich Stassen and Marie Maertfeld. Becke was the daughter of John Heicken and Mary Talke.
