Lawrence Hill is a Canadian novelist, essayist, and memoirist. He was born in Newmarket, Ontario, to an African-American father, Daniel Grafton Hill, III, and a white American mother, Donna Mae (Bender). He also has two siblings, Karen and Daniel, and speaks fluent English and French.
Daniel was originally from Independence, Missouri. Donna was born in South Dakota. They moved from Washington, D.C., to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1953.
His paternal grandfather was Daniel Grafton Hill, II. He was the son of Daniel Hill and Margaret Phoebe Peck. Daniel Hill’s parents were Richard Hill and Demias Crew.
His paternal grandmother was Mae/May Edwards.
His maternal grandfather was George Almon Bender. His parents were Thomas Bender and Gertrude Johnson.
His maternal grandmother was Ruby Belle Duryee.
