Michael is the son of Carol Joan (Hansen) and Ronald “Ron” Hugh Emerson. He has a brother, Patrick, and had a sister, Melissa. They were raised in Toledo, Iowa. Michael is married to actress Carrie Preston.
Michael’s father has English, German, and Irish ancestry. Michael’s mother is of half-Danish, half-Czech descent.
