Adolphe Adam was a French composer of the romantic era known for his ballets, operas and the Christmas carol “Minuit, chrétiens” (“O Holy Night”).
His father was Alsatian German, and his mother was French.
Adolphe’s father, Jean-Louis (Johann Ludwig) Adam was born in Muttersholtz, Alsace, to Mathias Adam and Marie-Dorothée Meyer. In 1775 he moved to Paris where he became professor at the Paris Conservatory.
Adolphe’s mother, Élisabeth-Charlotte-Jeanne Coste was the daughter of Thomas Coste and Charlotte Louise Delaporte.
